5 mistakes you're making in your Instagram bio
It's likely that these days, your Instagram will be your first impression your potential clients have from you...so you HAVE to make yourself stand out. One way to do that is with you Instagram bio! I come across so many small business owners who have a really poor bio. If you're curious to know what mistakes you might be making with your Insta bio, keep on reading ;).
1. Not having your name
Ok this should be a no-brainer, but I seriously have seen so many Instagram accounts (especially business accounts) that don't tell me the name of the person running it. WHY!? Your name is the first thing people should see. Your name personalizes you, it makes you human, it gives people a reference when they contact you. I often see businesses replacing the name part with "________ florist/artist/photographer/calligrapher" you name it, and trust me, you want that in your Insta bio, but not for the name portion. We'll get into key words in my next point, but definitely make SURE if you have nothing else, at least have your name!
2. Not having key words
Instagram has literally become it's own little search engine. More and more people are finding companies they love on the app, rather than doing a quick Google search. What is one VERY specific thing you do? Are you a wedding photographer who loves boho weddings? You need to have the key word boho in your bio. Maybe you're selling all natural fragrances and soaps...you need to put that in your bio!
3. Not having a way to get in touch with you
Whether you have a business account set up, or a personal account that you're using as a business, you need to have a way for your followers to get in touch with you. If you don't have a business account, I'd recommend leaving your email toward the bottom. But people who are interested in what you have to offer will eventually want to get in touch with you, and trust me, they're not going to take the time to step off the app and do all the research it takes to find your email when you could have made it really easy for them in the first place.
4. Not having your location
Let's also talk about location. If you're a service based business owner, you NEED to have your location! If someone who finds you lives in Oregon, and you also happen to live in Oregon yet you don't specify that, then they're more likely to find someone else who has their location in their bio. People are not likely going to do the research to find out where you're based; making that quick and easy for your potential customers gives you more of an opportunity to book.
5. Not having a call to action
You obviously WANT people to follow you, or you want people to click your link, or visit one of your story highlights, but most people aren't willing to give you what you want unless you ask them to do it! What is your goal when new potential customers come to your website. Do you want them to follow you? Do you want them to subscribe to your email list? Do you want them to watch your most recent story? Ask them to do that in your bio!
